Compartments Of The Lower Limb – Overview

Lower limb is divided into three compartments in the thigh and in the lower leg.

Compartments Of The Thigh

  • Divided into three compartments
  • Each compartment has a common function, supplying nerve and a blood vessel
Compartments of the thigh

    • Biceps femoris
    • Semitendinosus
    • Semimembranosus
  • Nerve
    • Tibial part of the sciatic nerve
    • Except short head of biceps femoris which is supplied by common fibular part of the sciatic nerve
  • Blood supply
    • Branches of profunda femoris artery
  • Action
    • Hip joint – Extension
    • Knee joint – Flexion

  • Blood supply
    • Obturator artery
    • Profunda femoris artery
  • Action
    • Hip joint
      • Adduction
      • Flexion – Adductor magnus has a hamstring portion of the muscle
      • External rotation
    • Knee joint : Flexion

Compartments Of The Leg
  • Divided into three compartments
  • Posterior compartment is the largest
